1909 T204 Ramly Walter Johnson & Johnny Evers
The T204 Ramly Series: The Fine Art of the Tobacco Era
Card Specs: 2" x 2.5" | 121 cards | Black-and-white with gold-embossed frames | Classification: Tobacco | T204
While the rival American Tobacco Company dominated the market with the mass-produced T206 "Monster" set, the 1909 T204 Ramly release was positioned as a luxury alternative. Designed to evoke the opulence of the Gilded Age, the T204s stand as arguably the most aesthetically-refined cards of the prewar hobby.
The set features a 121-card checklist that is most notable for omitting some of the era's biggest stars. The undisputed crown jewel is "Big Train" Walter Johnson , widely considered to be his rookie card despite his inclusion in the same year's T206 issue. Other Hall of Fame icons like Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Mordecai Brown, "Wee" Willie Keeler, and Johnny Evers are present, yet the set is historically defined by its curious omissions.
Deadball Era legends such as Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Nap Lajoie, and Christy Mathewson are nowhere to be found, likely because of the ATC's aggressive "exclusive" grip on the era's biggest superstars, and T204 Ramly's local regional (Boston) focus.
Guilded Gold: T204 Ramly Card Design
The design of the T204 is a departure from its tobacco and caramel contemporaries, both in size and design. The cards were near square at 2" x 2.5", and featured black and white photo portraits set within an ornate gold-embossed oval frame. The delicate gold borders are prone to chipping and "greening" from oxidation, while the thin stock often suffered from tobacco staining, making high-grade examples extremely rare and valuable in the current market.
In one of the great tobacco card mysteries, seven players also appear in square-frame variations. Since these players all had deeply-rooted local connections, it is believed that they could be an extremely limited run regional variation. Their blank backs also indicate that they could be simply press-proofs of a print run that never developed. In any event, the T204 square variations are some of the most rare and valuable of all prewar cards.
Card backs advertise Ramly cigarettes, though a small number were distributed with the much rarer T.T.T. brand back. These T.T.T. versions are considered some of the scarcest tobacco card backs from the prewar era.
Unlike the T206s, which were distributed across the country via the massive ATC trust, the Ramly cards had a much smaller regional release centered in the Northeast. This limited distribution, combined with a relatively short production window in 1909, accounts for their scarcity today. Because they were packed directly against the tobacco product without protection, surviving examples with clean surfaces and sharp gold embossing are considered condition rarities that command substantial price premiums in today's auction market.
T204 Value in Today's Market
The Walter Johnson rookie is in a class of its own, with mid-grade examples fetching upwards of $50,000 and high-grade specimens (PSA 8 or higher) soaring into six-figures. For the specialist, the "Square Frame" variations and T.T.T. backs are the ultimate prizes, often doubling or tripling the value of the standard Ramly-backed counterpart whenever they surface at major auctions. Mid-grade Hall of Famers often range from $2,000 to $5,000, while low-grade commons generally start between $200 and $600.
