1911 T205 Gold Border Tobacco Cards
Treasures Wrapped in Gold: T205 Gold Border
Card Specs: 1.44" x 2.63" | 208 cards | Color | Classification: Tobacco | T205
The T205 Gold Border set, released in 1911 by the American Tobacco Company, is widely regarded as one of the most visually appealing prewar baseball issues. The cards feature detailed lithographic portraits framed by gold borders, giving them their familiar nickname.
Baseball royalty Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Frank Chance, and Eddie Collins are among the 208 card T205 checklist, inclusive of variations, which spans the American League, National League, and a smaller run of 12 Minor League players. Contrary to popular belief, despite the lower number classification the T205 set was produced after the more well-known T206 White Border issue.
Three Leagues, Three Styles: T205 Card Design
American League cards feature a baseball diamond frame and the respective club’s logo, while National League players' cards use a flat color backdrop paired with one of the earliest uses of a replica player signature. The 12 Minor League cards include more ornate border patterns and partial action poses.
Like the T206 issue, the card backs include various tobacco advertisements, but the T205 Gold Border cards uniquely contain biographical information and stats, with the ads relegated to the bottom quarter of the card back.
Chips & Stains: T205 Distribution & Condition
T205 Gold Border baseball cards were distributed by the American Tobacco Company in 1911, primarily through packs of Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, and Old Mill cigarettes, with each pack typically containing one randomly inserted card. Some advertisements were more scarce, including Cycle, Sovereign, and Honest Long Cut, placing a value premium on cards containing them.
The set was promoted to encourage collectors to complete the series, propelling more tobacco sales. Naturally, their tobacco-based distribution often resulted in staining, corner wear, and the gold borders often fade or chip, resulting in very few high-grade examples surviving in today's market. Less than 3% of examples submitted to the card evaluation service PSA have graded above 7.
