MJ's Modern Grail: 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball

Card Specs: 2.5" x 3.5" | 132 cards + 11 stickers | Full Color | Modern Basketball

1986-1987 Fleer Basketball marked the rebirth of the modern basketball card market and Fleer’s return to the sport after a 25-year absence. Issued nationally in 1986, the 132-card set (plus 11 stickers) arrived as basketball cards had largely vanished from mainstream circulation after Topps ended production in 1981, with only the Star Company filling the void through limited regional releases. Fleer’s nationwide distribution restored basketball cards to retail shelves just as the league stood on the brink of a new golden age, fueled by rising television exposure and the emergence of a new generation of superstars.

Top Players and Rookies

The set is headlined by Michael Jordan’s iconic rookie card (#57), widely regarded as the most important basketball card ever produced and a cornerstone of the entire hobby. The checklist is further strengthened by a remarkable concentration of Hall of Fame talent, including established stars Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Julius Erving, along with key rookies and early-career cards of Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas, and Dominique Wilkins (extended rookies due to earlier Star Company issues). True pack-issued rookies such as Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Chris Mullin, and Charles Oakley add additional depth and long-term significance to the set.

Red, White, & Blue: Card Design & Distribution

Cards measure the standard 2½" x 3½" and are printed on relatively thin white card stock, making mishandled examples vulnerable to degraded value. The front design features full-color player photography framed by a bold red, white, and blue border with a thin yellow inner edge, while the “Fleer Premier” logo appears consistently in a top corner. Card backs are printed in red and blue and include statistical summaries and brief biographical information, with some cards noting mid-season trades.

1986-1987 Fleer Basketball Wax Pack graded PSA NM-MT 8

The set was distributed in 12-card wax packs (11 cards plus one sticker and a stick of gum), with 36 packs per box, and sold at retail for 50 cents per pack. Dark borders and frequent centering issues have made high-grade examples especially difficult to locate.

MJ Reigns Supreme: 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Values

Value within the set is overwhelmingly driven by the Michael Jordan rookie. Raw examples routinely exceed $2,000, while gem-mint PSA 10 copies command well into the six-figure range, placing the card among the most valuable modern sports cards.  In top condition his sticker can also cross six figures, dropping to around $10,000 when graded 9, and around $1,000 when graded 8.

The allure of hunting for freshly-pulled Jordan rookies has driven prices for unopened materials to record-breaking levels. Graded, unopened wax packs can command more than $25,000, while any unopened box will reach six figures, with a steep premium if key cards can be identified through the paper wrapper. Cases of 12-boxes will reach into the millions.
