Postwar Baseball - 1960s Cards
Presented is the single most amazing and simply unprecedented collection of 1962 Post Cereal Baseball cards ever offered or even assembled: This simply remarkable collection consists of an exceptional near-complete master set of 1962 Post Cereal, consisting of all 200 cards in a basic set plus nine of ten variations as documented in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (missing only the very rare #173a Roberto Clemente [blue lines] variation) . . . PLUS, incredibly, an additional 327 unchecklisted variations (relating to colors, cropping, and statistics). The Standard Catalog notes that these numerous variations "exist due to the different cereal boxes on which the cards were printed"; however, it would be nearly impossible to get an accurate count of exactly many of these such variations exist. (We bet it would be pretty close to 327 though!)

This set has been consigned by one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition, eye-appeal, and (as can be seen here!) an unparalleled focus on variations and extreme completeness. Frankly, we've never seen anything like this for 1962 Post and had no idea the assembly of a master set collection with this incredible number of variations was even possible. (We can say the same about his 1961 and 1963 Post Cereal sets, which are presented as separate lots in this auction.) The condition of this extraordinary collection: 11% Ex-Mt or better, 41% Ex, 26% Vg-Ex, and 22% Gd/Vg (mostly due to light creasing or pencil on the reverse). The preceding grades, as well as those in the composite below, are without respect to the neatness of the cut as professional grading companies require that all of the borders be present in order for a card to receive a numerical grade, and many of these cards would only qualify for "Authentic" because they are cut inside of, or too close to, the borders. (This set, as a whole, is cut FAR better than is normally encountered with Post Cereal cards.) We submitted five cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: Three #5a Mantle (two EX 5 and Authentic, otherwise Vg-Ex), 5b Mantle (Fr), three 6a Maris (EX-MT 6 and two Vg), two 55 Wynn (Ex-Mt and Vg-Ex), two 61 Yastrzemski (Ex-Mt and Ex), three 69 Keough (two Ex and Vg), two 83 Allison (Ex-Mt and Ex), 92 Siebern (Nr/Mt), two 101 Hodges (Ex-Mt and Ex), 109a Koufax (blue lines, Vg-Ex), four 109 Koufax (red lines, Nr/Mt, Ex, Vg, and Gd), 113 Larker (Ex), two 116 Coleman (Ex-Mt and Ex), two 127 Lynch (Ex and Gd/Vg), two 131 McCovey (both Ex), two 140 Marichal (Ex-Mt and Ex+), two 142 Mays (Ex and Vg-Ex), 145a Adcock (Ex), three 149 Aaron (EX-MT+ 6.5, Ex, and Vg-Ex), two 158 White (both Ex-Mt), and five 173b Clemente (red lines, Ex, Vg-Ex, two Vg, and Gd). We think it is reasonable to suggest that this lot may literally be a once-in-a-lifetime collecting opportunity! This is, without a doubt, the finest and most complete set of this scarce and extremely underrated early 1960s food issue that we have ever seen or heard of (or even contemplated!), let alone offered. Total: 536 cards.
