Postwar Baseball - 1970s to Present Cards
On the playgrounds of 1970, wealth was not measured by how many coins you had in your pocket. Or how many regular baseball cards you had. It was measured by how many 1970 Topps Super Baseball cards you had. They were bigger. They were thicker. They were special and something never before seen. One hundred of them looked like a million! 925 would have looked like a billion, but no one ever had that many. Offered is what would have seemed like the riches of King Tut in 1970, and could be described in a similar manner today: an incredible offering of a giant hoard of 925 1970 Topps Super Baseball cards, including 293 Hall of Famers and countless other semistars, including nineteen cards of Pete Rose. A total of three complete sets are contained within this hoard as individual card quantities range from three to thirty per card. Keys: #3 Aparicio (16), 4 Killebrew (17), 5 Seaver (10), 8 Bench (13), 11 Brock (8), 12 Clemente (13), 13 McCovey (13), 15 Niekro (29), 18 Mays (27), 19 Stargell (23), 21 Santo (17), 24 Aaron (20), 28 Jackson (28), 29 Yastrzemski (26), 33 Gibson (18), 34 Rose (19), 37 F. Robinson (8), 38 Powell (3), and 40 B. Williams (7). Condition of this collection ranges from Ex to Nr/Mt-Mt, averaging Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, with approximately 5% lesser. Consigned from an old-time collection, this hoard has been carefully stored since the year of issue. Because of its high-quality production values and scarcity relative to other Topps sets of the era, it is a little surprising that this issue has not received more attention from collectors, but this is primarily because for many years grading companies have not had holders for this large-format issue. This is no longer the case, and collectors have started building sets of these cards in graded form just like they've done for many years with standard-sized cards. There is a lot of value to be mined in this lot, and it offers tremendous break value and potential dealer inventory. Total: 925 cards.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
