Prewar Baseball - 1910s and 1920s Cards
Incredible complete baseball player set of twenty-six 1928 W513 strip cards, highlighted by twelve Hall of Famers, and entirely graded and encapsulated by PSA. This complete set currently ranks first on the PSA Set Registry with an impressive overall GPA of 8.12 (boosted to 8.81 with bonuses). These colorful cards are referred to as "strip cards" because they were originally issued in uncut sheets or "strips" and were cut apart, as intended, with scissors. In the early days of the organized hobby, strip cards did not "get any respect." It is only in recent years that collectors have begun to appreciate the distinctive look and tremendous value these cards represent. A continuation of the W512 series, this complete subset of twenty-six baseball players are included in a larger 90-card multi-subject series. Two of the cards in the offered set are "1 of 1" copies with none higher (noted in composite). PSA Grading Composite: MINT 9 (5 cards): #67 Terry, 69, 73 L. Waner (pop 1 with none higher), 78 Haines, and 79 Lazzeri. NM-MT+ 8.5 (2 cards): #84 and 85 (pop 1 with none higher). NM-MT 8 (16 cards): #61 Roush, 63, 64, 68 Pennock, 70 P. Waner, 71, 72 Grimes, 74 Wilson, 75, 76, 77, 80, 81, 82 Traynor, 83, and 86 Combs. NM 7 (3 cards): #62 Hoyt, 65, and 66. Difficult to assemble and rarely offered as a set, especially this sharp, this would make a worthy addition to any prewar collection. Total: 26 cards. Opening Bid $1,000.
