Extremely rare Baltimore Orioles home vest-style jersey worn by Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson. Graded A9 by MEARS. The Baltimore Orioles interspersed this vest version of their home jersey into game uniforms worn throughout the 1968 and 1969 seasons. Though the jersey is tagged "68-1" under the "Wilson 44" label, it is possible that this jersey also carried over into the 1969 season because they were not used as frequently as traditional tops. The white flannel jersey is lettered "Orioles" across the front and features the number "5" on the left breast and reverse. "B. Robinson" is lettered on the reverse directly above the number. All front letters, as well as all front and reverse numerals, are appliquéd in orange on black tackle twill. All reverse letters are appliquéd in black tackle twill. MEARS has noted in its letter of opinion that there is evidence of restoration to the reverse nameplate, which is responsible for the one-point deduction. The jersey is otherwise original as issued. It presents exceptionally well and displays light wear overall. Robinson batted .253 with 17 home runs and 75 RBI in 1968. He also led the Orioles in games played (162), at-bats (608), hits (154), doubles (36) and triples (6). Considered to be the greatest fielding third baseman in history, Robinson won his ninth (out of an eventual record sixteen) consecutive Gold Glove Award at season's end. This is an exceptional Robinson flannel of this rare vest style that would be at home in even the most advanced collection. Graded A9 by MEARS (base grade of 10 with one point deducted for alteration on reverse nameplate). Full LOA from MEARS. Opening Bid $5,000.
