Prewar Baseball - Early 1900s Cards
Attractive example of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from this extremely rare vignette real-photo postcard series issued in 1908. This is a very unusual and distinctive set featuring only Pittsburgh Pirates players, and it is believed that these cards were originally sold as souvenirs at Pittsburgh's Exhibition Field in 1908. Each postcard pictures the player in uniform and includes the player's last name, team, position, and year printed in white lettering within the body of the photo. This issue, designated "PC800," is distinguished by its irregular vignette photo borders and traditional divided postcard reverse. This is just the third example of this postcard we have ever offered. The offered postcard (5-3/8 x 3-3/8 inches) has a short note scripted in pencil on the front, with even corner wear, a light coat of glue residue across the top portion (does not affect Wagner's image), and minor soiling on the reverse. The reverse is addressed in pencil and has been mailed, with a postmark of "Jul 9 1908." Encapsulated as "Authentic - Altered" by SGC (submitted by REA). This is a very attractive and rarely seen example that would be at home in any advanced postcard or Honus Wagner collection. Opening Bid $300.
