Collection of eighty-four Chicago Cubs payroll checks issued in 1920. The signatures of two different Cubs front-office executives appear, respectively, on the front of the checks: John O. Seys (12) and William Veeck (70) plus two not signed. The signatures are scripted in either black or blue fountain pen. The checks are made out to (and endorsed on the reverse by) the following players: Four Bailey (5/15, 7/15, 8/31, and 9/15), four Barber (5/10, 6/30, 7/31, and 8/31), three Carter (4/30, 6/30, and 9/15), three Daly (5/15, 6/15, and 9/16), four Deal (3/27, 8/16, 9/15, and 9/30), five Flack (2/26, 4/30, 7/15, 8/16, and 8/31), four Friberg (5/15, 6/15, 9/15, and 10/3), Gaw (6/15), three Hendrix (5/15, 8/31, and 9/30), five Herzog (4/15, 4/30, 8/3, 8/16, and 9/30), five Hollocher (4/15, 6/30, 7/7, 8/16, and 8/31), three Jaeger (8/4, 9/15, and 12/5), six Killefer (2/6, 3/17, 5/15, 7/15, 7/31, and 8/16), four Martin (5/15, 6/30, 8/16, and 9/15), McCabe (4/15), Newkirk (4/30), three O'Farrell (5/15, 7/31, and 8/31), five Paskert (4/15, 5/15, 7/15, 7/31, and 9/30), three Robertson (4/15, 5/15, and 9/30), two Terry (4/30 and 9/15), two Turner (2/23 and 4/30), four Twombly (4/14, 4/30, 7/31, and 9/30), four Tyler (4/30, 7/15, 7/31, and 8/16), and five Vaughn (3/31, 4/15, 5/15, 6/30, and 8/16). The checks (8.25 x 3.75 inches) all have normal bank cancellation stamps and holes. Flaws included but not limited to: edge tears, folds, and creases. In Good to Very Good condition overall. This lot originates from the extraordinary collection of a longtime Chicago Cubs executive, Eldred "Salty" Saltwell, which is consigned to this auction by his family. Total: 84 checks.
