Collection of sixty-five Chicago Cubs payroll checks issued in 1919. The signatures of two different Cubs front-office executives appear, respectively, on the front of the checks: John O. Seys (9) and William Veeck (56). The signatures are scripted in either black or blue fountain pen. The checks are made out to (and endorsed on the reverse by) the following players: Four Bailey (4/30, 5/31, 9/1, and 9/29), six Barber (5/1, 5/31, 7/9, 7/15, 9/15, and 9/29), six Carter (3/19, 5/15, 7/15, 7/31, 9/15, and 9/29), four Deal (3/24, 7/31, 9/1, and 9/29), four Flack (two 5/31, 8/15, and 9/29), four Hendrix (5/15, 5/31, 7/31, and 9/25), two Herzog (8/30 and 9/29), five Hollocher (3/19, 5/15, 8/15, 9/1, and 9/15), four Killefer (3/12, 4/16, 5/31, and 9/29), four Mann (4/3, 4/8, 5/15, and 6/14), four Martin (5/15, 5/31, 8/15, and 9/15), four McCabe (4/3, 5/15, 7/15, and 9/15), three Paskert (3/8, 3/19, and 7/15), three Robertson (8/3, 8/10, and 9/1), five Tyler (4/30, 6/30, 7/12, 9/15, and 9/21), and three Vaughn (7/15, 8/15, and 9/29). The checks (8.25 x 3.75 inches) all have normal bank cancellation stamps and holes. Flaws included but not limited to: edge tears, folds, and creases. In Good to Very Good condition overall. This lot originates from the extraordinary collection of a longtime Chicago Cubs executive, Eldred "Salty" Saltwell, which is consigned to this auction by his family. Total: 65 checks.
