Collection of sixty-nine Chicago Cubs payroll checks issued in 1919. The signatures of two different Cubs front-office executives appear, respectively, on the front of the checks: John O. Seys (7) and William Veeck (62). The signatures are scripted in either black or blue fountain pen. The checks are made out to (and endorsed on the reverse by) the following players: Two Bailey (5/15 and 6/30), two Barber (6/14 and 7/22), four Carter (4/30, 5/31, 6/14, and 9/1), ten Daly (3/19, 4/30, 5/15, 5/31, 6/14, 7/15, 7/31, 9/1, 9/15, and 9/29), two Deal (6/14 and 8/15), five Douglas (2/25, 3/19, 4/30, 6/14, and 7/15), five Flack (4/30, 5/15, 6/14, 7/31, and 9/1), two Friberg (7/31 and 9/1), three Hendrix (4/17, 7/10, and 9/1), two Herzog (9/1 and 9/15), Killefer (4/8), four Mann (4/30, 5/31, 7/15, and 7/31), three Martin (3/31, 6/14, and 9/1), two McCabe (4/30 and 9/29), Newkirk (9/15), six O'Farrell (4/9, 5/15, 5/31, 7/15, 9/1, and 9/29), five Paskert (5/15, 5/31, 6/14, 9/1, and 9/15), six Pick (4/30, 5/15, 5/27, 5/31, 6/14, and 7/15), three Robertson (8/10, 9/15, and 9/22), and Tyler (6/15). The checks (8.25 x 3.75 inches) all have normal bank cancellation stamps and holes. Flaws included but not limited to: edge tears, folds, and creases. In Good to Very Good condition overall. This lot originates from the extraordinary collection of a longtime Chicago Cubs executive, Eldred "Salty" Saltwell, which is consigned to this auction by his family. Total: 69 checks.
