M101-2 Sporting News supplement featuring the two greatest players of the dead ball era: Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This is one of the keys to the M101-2 set (the other is Joe Jackson) and, as noted in the lower-right corner, the photo is credited to noted baseball photographer Louis Van Oeyen. The publication date of March 17, 1910, appears in the upper-left corner. This photo was taken the previous fall when Cobb's Tigers met Wagner's Pirates in the World Series, which marked the only time the future Hall of Famers ever faced each other on the diamond. This example has a bold image of the two legends. Graded POOR 1 by PSA largely due to evidence of album removal on the reverse. Dimensions: approximately 7-7/8 x 9-7/8 inches. Opening Bid $10.
