Extremely desirable example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the E94 George Close Candy set, one of the most popular and highly collected of all 1910-era caramel-card sets. The E94 Cobb is considered by many to be among Cobb's most classic cards. The offered card displays a bold background and a crisp image of Cobb. The reverse features a checklist for the set. Graded POOR 1 by SGC, condition issues include scattered creasing and moderate corner wear. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult to find. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a modestly graded, relatively affordable classic caramel card of the legendary Ty Cobb from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue, and one that would be an outstanding addition to any “E” card, Hall of Famer, Ty Cobb, or classic prewar-card collection. Opening Bid $10.
