Collection of seventy-five Chicago Cubs payroll checks issued from 1916 to 1921. The signatures of four different Cubs front-office executives appear, respectively, on the front of the checks: Charles Weeghman, Walter Craighead, John O. Seys and William Veeck. The signatures are scripted in either black or blue fountain pen. The checks are made out to (and endorsed on the reverse by) the following players: Aldrich (1921), three L. Benton (all 1917), D. Brown (1921), N. Carter (1917), Deal (1917), two M. Donahue (both 1921), J. Doyle (1921), two Dugey (both 1921), J. Kelly (1918), two Leonard (both 1921), Maisel (1921), Marriott (1917), J. Martin (1918), McCabe (1918), two Mitchell (both 1917), Mullen (1921), Mulligan (1916), Murphy (1917), two Napier (both 1918), two Newkirk (both 1920), two Packard (both 1917), two Pechous (both 1917), Perry (1917), four Robertson (1919 and three 1920), two Saier (both 1917), three Schick (all 1917), seven Seaton (all 1917), two Shay (both 1917), three Terry (two 1920 and 1921), three Turner (all 1919), six Twombly (three 1920 and three 1921), Wallace (1917), two Warner (both 1921), four Wortman (1917 and three 1918), two York (both 1921), and three Zabel (1916 and two 1917). The checks (8.25 x 3.75 inches) all have normal bank cancellation stamps and holes. Flaws included but not limited to: edge tears, folds, and creases. In Fair to Very Good condition overall. This lot originates from the extraordinary collection of a longtime Chicago Cubs executive, Eldred "Salty" Saltwell, which is consigned to this auction by his family. Total: 75 checks.
