Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Outstanding mid-grade example of Eddie Mathews’ (Boston Braves) rookie card. In addition to being his rookie card, 1952 Topps card #407 Eddie Mathews is also one of only a few key Hall of Famers in the rare high-number series, and as the last card in the set, is also a condition rarity. Just as card #1 Pafko was subject to wear due to gravitating to the top of the pile, #407 Mathews was also subject to excessive wear at the bottom of the pile. In anything even resembling high grade, this has always been a very difficult card for anyone putting together a quality 1952 Topps set. The image on the front of this example is exceptionally well centered (far better than normally seen as this card is frequently encountered with centering issues) with original gloss, brilliant colors, and honest corner wear. The reverse of the card is clean with bold print. This is an extremely attractive mid-grade example of this important condition rarity that would be worthy of any high-quality 1952 Topps set or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection. Opening Bid $1,500.
