One-page typed letter, dated January 28, 1897, signed by Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States. The letter dates from the time of his service as police commissioner of New York City. In his letter, written on official "NYC Police Department" letterhead, Roosevelt writes to Alexander Oliphant. In full: Dear Mr. Oliphant: I am very much obliged to you for your note. I will let my remarks stand just as I made them. Again thanking you, I am Very truly yours," It is signed "Theodore Roosevelt" in black fountain pen. In 1897 Teddy Roosevelt was serving in his last year as police commissioner and would be elected governor of New York in 1898. In 1900 Roosevelt ascended to the vice presidency of the United States and in 1901 became the youngest president ever at age 43, following the assassination of William McKinley. Roosevelt served in the White House until 1908 and remained a popular national political figure until his death in 1919. The letter (7-3/4 x 10-1/2 inches) has vertical and horizontal mailing folds and light creases. In Very Good condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $200.
