Part of the legend of Joe Jackson is that he was illiterate and could not sign even his name. In fact, Jackson could sign, but he was very reluctant to do so and rarely signed except when absolutely necessary, usually on legal documents. This did not stop autograph seekers from requesting Jackson's signature, and when these occasional requests came in they were honored by Mrs. Jackson, who would sign Joe's name for him. Offered is a "Joe Jackson" signature by Mrs. Jackson, scripted in black ink on the side panel of a red-and-blue stitched official American League baseball (Johnson). The notation "St. Louis Browns/5-5-17/No Hit - No Run/'Browns" 1 - 'White Sox' 0" is neatly written in black ink on the sweet spot. There is light coat of protective shellac, otherwise the ball is in Excellent condition overall. Though not signed by Joe Jackson, this is a very interesting item relating to his legend and given the great rarity of his signature, it represents a very economical alternative to, or complement to, an authentic Joe Jackson signature. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $300.
