Prewar Baseball - 1930s and 1940s Cards
In the 1930s, Wheaties issued package-design baseball cards on the backs of its cereal boxes, which were intended to be hand cut from the boxes by youngsters. These were difficult to collect back in the 1930s (imagine getting just one card per box of cereal), and are not a lot easier to collect today! Offered is a complete twelve-card set of Wheaties Series 3, issued in 1936. Eight Hall of Famers highlight this set, including Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg. This is a very presentable lower-grade set with excellent eye appeal for the technically modest grades. All of the grades that follow are without respect to the neatness of the cut as the cards were intended to be cut by hand and can vary greatly. This set consists of the following: Averill (Pr due to back damage, HOF), Cochrane (Pr, HOF), Foxx (most of frame trimmed away, otherwise Pr, HOF), Gehrig (piece missing from top border, otherwise Vg+, HOF), Greenberg (Gd, HOF), Hartnett (Vg+, HOF), Hubbell (Fr, HOF), Martin (Pr), Mungo (Pr-Fr), Newsom (Pr), Vaughn (includes Wheaties ad at base, otherwise Pr-Fr, HOF), and Wilson (most of frame trimmed away, otherwise Fr). Wheaties Cereal box panels are among the most beautiful, interesting, and substantial cards of the era and also represent one of the best values of all cards from the 1930s. This is a very presentable set of these unusual, scarce, and underrated Wheaties cereal package-design cards. Total: 12 cards. Opening Bid $300.
