Presented is a substantial collection of 151 mostly mid-grade 1938 R69 "Horrors of War" cards (including 136 different of the 288 in the set). Issued by Gum, Inc., “Horrors of War” is perhaps the single most famous nonsport-card set ever issued. The exceptionally colorful graphics and politically charged descriptions on their reverses also made this series one of the most controversial sets ever issued. Condition is 16% Ex to Ex-Mt (including a few Nr/Mt), 68% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 16% lesser (including one altered, a couple that measure small, and nine trimmed). Fourteen cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA. This collection consists of the following: #1 "Marco Polo Bridge is Scene of First Fighting" (partially erased pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg), 7, 9, 10, two 12, 14, 15, 17, 29, 31 (EX 5), 35, 36, 37, 38, two 39, 40, 41, three 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50 (EX 5), 51, 52, 53, 54, two 55 (one displays a rare advertising overprint on the reverse, Gd+), 56, 57, 58, two 59, two 60, two 61 (one is NM-MT 8 [OC]), 62, three 64, 65, 66, 70, 71, 71, 72, 73, 76, two 78 (one is NM-MT 8 [OC]), 79, 80, 84, 86, 88, 90, 91, 96, two 97 (one is EX-MT 6), 99, 102 (EX-MT 6), 103, 104 (EX-MT 6), 105, 106, 110, two 112 (one is EX-MT 6), 116, 117, 121, 123, 125, 126, 127, 129, 130, 131, 140, two 141 (one is EX+ 5.5), 144, 147, 149, 152, 156, 160 (EX 5), 161, 162, 164, 165, 168, 171, 178 (EX-MT 6), 179, 182, 184, 186 (NM 7), 188, 192, 196, 197, 200, 205, 207, 209, 211, 215 (EX-MT 6), 216, 217, 220, 221, 224, 225, 226, 227, 229, 230, 233, 234, 235, 237, 239, two 241, 242, 246, 248, 251, 255, 257, 263, 264, 265, 269, 272 (NM 7), 276, 278, 279, 281, and 282.
