Mickey Mantle H&B signature-model "M110" bat issued to him for use in the All-Star Game of 1964, which was held on July 7th at Shea Stadium. Graded GU 9 by PSA/DNA. The special block-letter stamping on the barrel reads "1964 ALL STAR GAME" and "NEW YORK", respectively, above and below Mantle's stamped facsimile signature. All of the manufacturer's stampings, including the model number on the knob end, remain exceptionally bold and well defined. The bat, which is not cracked, displays evidence of moderate use, including several ball marks. A chip on the handle has been professionally repaired (hardly visible to the naked eye), and the luster to the finish has also been restored. According to the LOA from PSA/DNA, H&B factory records indicate that Mantle was sent two bats on July 1, 1964, the offered "M110" model bat and a "K90" model bat as well.
The year 1964 was a particularly significant one for the city of New York, which hosted the All Star Game as part of the 1964 New York World's Fair. Mantle started in center field and batted third for the American League in the 1964 All-Star Game. In four trips to the plate, he singled, grounded out, and struck out twice. He also scored a run in the 7-4 loss to the National League. His lone hit in four at bats would mark his last hit in an All Star game. 1964 marked the last time Mantle would start for the American League in the annual midsummer classic. In fact, Mantle only made two more All-Star Game appearances during his career, appearing as a pinch-hitter in both 1967 and 1968, making this bat an all the more significant memento relating to his long and storied All-Star Game exploits. All-Star Game bats have long been highly prized by collectors both for their rarity (only two were issued to each player) and the fact that each can be dated to a specific year. Those issued to players of Mantle's stature, especially high-grade examples such as this, are all the more significant. Despite his having made fourteen All-Star Game appearances, Mantle All-Star Game bats are seldom seen. This extraordinary example, dating from Mantle's last great season (111 RBI, 35 home runs, .303 average) and just three years removed from the historic 1961 season, is only the fourth Mantle All-Star Game bat we have offered in the past twenty years. This is an outstanding Mantle bat in all respects and one that would be among the highlights of any advanced Mantle, Hall of Fame bat, or New York collection. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 32.1 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $10,000.
