One-page typed letter written by a fan to Lou Gehrig, dated May 27, 1932, signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the letter and certified both signatures as "Authentic." This letter was sent by our consignor's grandmother to Lou Gehrig in request of an autographed baseball, which was eventually sent to her and is featured as a separate lot in this current auction. In full: Dear Lou:- I am a staunch admirer of the "New York Yankees" and especially of Babe Ruth and yourself. I don't really believe that this letter is going to do me a bit of good but I am hoping for the best & if you don't grant me my little wish I shall never forgive you. But all joking aside, I have wanted to get you and Babe to autograph a ball for me the worst way. I know that Babe is such a big shot that he would throw the letter in the waste basket and forget about it. I am counting on you Lou. You are a friend of my cousin, Will Hickenbothem of Jersey. He used to go fishing with you I believe, not that that cuts any ice but it might interest you. I know it is seldom a girl writes for signatures of ball players but I love baseball before all sports even to dancing and would treasure any signature I could get from the "Yankees". I am married and have a little girl of my own that loves baseball as I do. Even if I do not ever hear from you again I want to take this opportunity to wish you all the success in the world for this season. I will send a ball if I get your permission. Yours very truly, Mrs. James Hampton (sig) - Please Lou. Both Ruth and Gehrig's signatures have been boldly scripted in graphite pencil along the bottom. The letter (8.5 x 11 inches) displays normal mailing folds, edge chipping on three sides, light discoloration along the borders, and minor wrinkles throughout. In Fair to Good condition overall. This is the first letter signed by both Ruth and Gehrig that we offered in the past twenty years! Reserve $2,500.
