Offered is the actual original artwork to card #104 of New York Yankees infielder Red Rolfe from the 1935 R327 Diamond Stars National Chicle baseball card set. This is a very attractive card from the series and one that is an ideal example as it displays all the artistic elements characteristic of the R327 set. This is only the fourth time we have offered an original R327 card artwork (this auction features two different examples). The Diamond Stars set is highly prized by collectors in large part because of the beautiful artwork and art deco-inspired designs of the set. The detail and the geometric background designs of the offered example are exceptional. Artwork for card sets from the 1930s are exceedingly rare. Back in the late 1970s a group of material surfaced in the collecting world directly from the family of a National Chicle employee, which included approximately thirty original R327 Diamond Star artworks, approximately twenty-five National Chicle Football artworks, and approximately 100 additional artworks from several National Chicle nonsport sets (including R136 Sky Birds). The offered artwork originates directly from this historic find and is an exceptional example of original 1930s gum card artworks. The artwork is accompanied by an example of the issued card. As is the case with all Diamond Stars artworks, it is on thick artist’s board and measures 4-5/8 x 5-5/8 inches. Extremely clean with sharp, bright, crisp colors. In apparent Excellent condition. The artwork and original card are framed and matted together. Total dimensions are 15.25 x 12.5 inches.
