Superb original relay torch used in advance of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, the first Olympic Games in South Korea since 1988. This impressive piece was meticulously designed with a number of symbolic and purposeful features in mind, including its length of 700 mm (approximately 27 5/8") to represent PyeongChang's 700 m above sea level along with openings and contours in the torch itself to combat wind and rain encountered by the ceremonial torchbearers along the route from Greece to South Korea. According to the official Olympics historical resource, approximately 7,500 individuals participated in the relay, which makes this modern torch an accessible one for collectors but in no way detracts from its luster and significance. The white-and-gold torch is constructed from sturdy plated aluminum and features a small, colorful emblem of the host city on the face of the torch. The piece remains in outstanding condition, presenting as Near Mint overall, with only a small sticker, likely tied to the relay itself, affixed to the reverse. This is a superb commemorative relic from this important sporting event and symbol of international unity and competition. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $1,000.
