Rare cabinet photo capturing the 1906 National League Champion Chicago Cubs posing together on the field in their home white uniforms. Sixteen team members are pictured, including Hall of Famers Frank Chance, Johnny Evers, Joe Tinker, and Mordecai Brown. Each player is identified in black print along the base. The 1906 Cubs, who won a then-record 116 games in 1906, would probably have gone down in the annals of baseball history as the greatest team of all time had they not been upset in the World Series by their crosstown rivals, the Chicago White Sox. This is the only example of this particular 1906 Cubs team photo we have ever seen, and the fact that it is a large-format cabinet only adds to its desirability. The caption along the top reads "Chicago National League Championship Team 1906." The photographer's credit, "E. Frieberg 2495" and the copyright date "1906" appears in the lower right. The photo (9.5 x 5.25 inches), which displays strong clarity, has a few minor surface blemishes that do not significantly detract from its overall Excellent appearance. The mount (11 x 7 inches) displays toning, edge and corner wear, and the two lower corners missing. This is both a unique and significant turn-of-the-century baseball photo capturing one of the most celebrated teams of the dead-ball era. According to our consignor, this photo comes with the unique provenance of once belonging to early hobby pioneer Don Steinbach. Reserve $500.
