Spalding store-model bat ("50W") inscribed by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen on the handle. The bat is accompanied by a full LOA from PSA/DNA, with PSA having graded the signature NM-MT 8. Based on the manufacturer's stampings, this bat most likely dates from the 1920s and therefore was possibly signed during Ruth's playing career. Babe Ruth personally signed bats are exceptionally rare and were normally presented only to his closest friends. Maxine "Miki" Herzberg-Fisher, who was his daughter Julia's dear friend, certainly fell into that elite circle. Ruth has inscribed the bat in black fountain pen on the handle "To my friend/Miki/From Babe Ruth." Given its outstanding provenance, and the care Ruth took with regard to signing it, its probable that this was a special presentation piece at the time and one that was cherished for decades. Autographed bats represent the rarest of all Ruth-signed items in the hobby, and the limited supply has always made them among the most sought-after pieces in the hobby. The bat is uncracked and displays extremely heavy wear. In Fair condition overall. Length: 30 inches. Weight: 20 ounces. Two Full LOAs from PSA/DNA (corresponding sticker affixed to the knob end). (Please note one of the PSA letters erroneously notes the inscription as "To Mike."). Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $1,000.
