Kansas City Royals home jersey worn by Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett in 1991. This jersey comes with a special provenance in that it was obtained directly from a team executive (Dean Vogelaar) and is accompanied by a handwritten letter from him on Kansas City Royals official letterhead. In full: "James- Please be assured it is an authentic jersey. I sent it to the Phillies for the auction. It is a new jersey we purchased for auction purposes. He wore it once. It's not one worn on a regular basis, however. Dean Vogelaar [signed]." The white knit jersey is lettered "Royals" on the front, with the numeral "5" appearing on both the left breast and reverse. "Brett" is lettered on the reverse, directly above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue tackle twill. Located on the left-front tail are a "Rawlings 44" label and an adjacent flag tag reading "Set 1 1991." A Kansas City Royals team patch appears on the left sleeve. A piece of custom Velcro has been sewn on the interior-side of the buttons. Brett has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie just to the left of the back number. The jersey is original with no alterations (except for piece of Velcro added) and shows light wear. George Brett was one of the greatest hitters of his era. Beginning in 1975, he batted higher than .300 on eleven separate occasions, including league-leading totals of .333 in 1976, .390 in 1980, and .329 in 1990. Hampered by a knee injury, Brett appeared in only 128 games in 1991. The injury obviously affected his performance at the plate, as he finished the season with 10 home runs, 65 RBI, and a .255 batting average. Brett retired two years later with a .305 average, 3,154 hits, 317 home runs, and 1,595 RBI. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 in his first year of eligibility. This is an outstanding George Brett jersey dating from the latter portion of his career, made all the more desirable by its remarkable provenance.
