Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA (submitted by REA). Of the 1,413 examples graded by PSA to date, only seventeen have been graded higher. Stunning ultra high-grade 1949 Bowman example of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson. This is one of Robinson’s most striking and popular cards, and one of the great classics of all postwar bubble-gum cards. 1949 Bowmans have always posed a problem for condition-conscious collectors. In addition to the many normal problems encountered with this issue (excessive toning, general wear from fragile paper stock, soft corners, centering issues, and print lines), collectors also have to deal with the wildly varying degrees of print quality that characterize the set. It is easy to see why 1949 Bowmans are one of the most difficult of all issues to collect in high grade. The offered example has a perfectly crisp image, with flawless registration, vibrant colors, and superb centering. Flawlessly clean front and back, with four sharp corners. The portrait of Jackie practically jumps off the flawless bold, red background. This is a remarkably crisp, ultra high-grade pack-fresh gem example of one of Robinson’s most classic cards, worthy of the finest 1949 Bowman set, Jackie Robinson, or classic-card collection.
