Imperial team cabinet photo featuring 14 members of the Princeton baseball team, posing together in a formal studio setting in 1896. Each player is pictured in uniform, except for the manager (pictured in the center background) who is wearing a suit. Produced by the noted New York photography studio Pach Bros. as noted in gold print along the base of the mount. This an extraordinary nineteenth-century baseball image. All the players are wearing pants with quilted padding (padded pants became popular during the 1880s and remained in vogue for a few decades until sliding pads, worn under the pants, replaced this early design feature) and the equipment shown includes an early catcher's mask, gloves, and bats. Research indicates that the players pictured here are as follows: Back Row (L to R): Easton, Wayave, Gunster, Earle, Jayne, Bradley (Captain), Elliott (manager), Wilson, Altman, Smith, and Wheeler. Front Row (L to R): Titus, Ward, and Sankey. The photo (13.5 x 10 inches) displays minor surface wear, a light crease in the upper right corner, and a small red mark at the top. The mount (13.75 x 10.75 inches) displays minor chipping along the border areas. The reverse of the mount displays moderate staining, several areas of surface chipping, and minor damage along the top edge (most likely from being removed from a mount of some sort). In Very Good condition overall. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $200.
