Collection of twenty Chicago Cubs contracts issued to coaches and managers between the years 1934 and 1947. All the contracts have been signed by the respective employee, and all have been signed by a team executive (Philip Wrigley is the official of record for most of the contracts). The signature of Ford Frick, National League President during this span, appears on the front of each contract (except for two), though four are secretarial. The contracts (8.5 x 11 inches) all display mailing folds and are in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Some of the contracts are multiyear agreements. For each individual represented here, we have noted his job title, the total number of contracts, and the range of years. The collection consists of the following: 1) John Corriden (coach, 5 contracts, 1934-1939). 2) Roy Johnson (coach, 5 contracts, 1935-1939). 3) Andy Lotshaw (trainer, 1 contract, 1936). 4) Roy Luster (batting practice pitcher, 1 contract, 1944). 5) Ray Poole (batting practice pitcher, 1 contract, 1947). 6) Charles Spalding (coach, 3 contracts, 1941 and 1943). 7) George Uhle (coach, 1 contract, 1940). 8) James Wilson (manager, 3 contracts, 1941-1942). This lot originates from the extraordinary collection of a longtime Chicago Cubs executive, Eldred "Salty" Saltwell, which is consigned to this auction by his family. The collection, which includes a remarkable array of contracts, checks, and other related documents and mementos, will be presented over a series of auctions and will offer publicly for the first time many significant items spanning decades of Chicago baseball. Total: 20 contracts. Reserve $300.
