Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Presented is an extraordinary rarity of Jim Thorpe issued by the Standard Biscuit Company of San Francisco. Standard Biscuit Company cards are very similar to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News. Perhaps because they were issued by a bakery company, Jefferson Burdick elected to give this M101-4/5 related issue its own catalog number. D350-1 Standard Biscuits are much rarer than most related issues. Important note: Thorpe appears only in the M101-5 and related sets (he simply does not appear in the M101-4 set, unlike almost all other M101-4/5 subjects), so his card is considerably rarer than almost all other players in the M101-4 and M101-5 and related sets. This is a stunning example of one of the very few baseball cards ever issued of the legendary Jim Thorpe and one of the prize cards of the era. There are very few cards of Thorpe in general, and his 1916 M101-5/D350-1 cards, with good reason, are universally recognized as being among card collecting's great classics. Standard Biscuit cards (as well as M101-4/5s) have a glossy coated surface that is very susceptible to creasing. A very faint surface wrinkle near Thorpe's bat (visible only under extremely close inspection) is responsible for downgrading what is otherwise an Excellent or better example. The image is bold and crisp. The corners show just a hint of wear (a little more in the lower left). Superb centering. The reverse has an advertisement for Standard Biscuit Company with bold, crisp text. This is a very attractive example of an extremely important rarity and would be a worthy addition to any world-class Jim Thorpe or rare vintage baseball-card collection. Reserve $5,000.
