Outstanding mid-grade complete set minus one (95 out of 96) of 1934 Goudey Gum, missing only one of the two Lou Gehrig cards (#37) for completion. 1934 Goudey, also commonly referred to as the "Lou Gehrig says..." set, is one of the most popular of all 1930s bubble-gum card issues. Included are stars such as Lou Gehrig, Dizzy Dean, Hank Greenberg, Lefty Grove, and Jimmy Foxx, among others, as well as the very scarce 24-card high-number series (#73-96) that has always made completing this classic set especially challenging for collectors. Eight cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (6) and SGC (2). Keys: #1 Foxx (SGC VG 3), 2 Cochrane (Fr), 6 Dean (Pr-Fr), 7 Durocher (Fr), 10 Klein (Fr-Gd), 11 Waner (Vg+), 12 Hubbell (Gd-Vg), 13 Frisch (Vg-Ex), 18 Manush (Vg), 19 Grove (PSA VG-EX 4), 21 Terry (Vg-Ex), 22 Vaughn (Gd), 23 Gehringer (Gd), 27 Appling (Gd), 34 Hafey (Gd+), 35 Lombardi (PSA VG 3), 61 Gehrig (SGC FAIR 1.5), 62 Greenberg (PSA EX 5) and 90 Cuyler (Vg). Additional PSA-Graded Cards: EX 5 (2 cards): #36 and 88. VG 3 (1 card): #95. The condition of the twenty-four rare high numbers (#73-96) is four Vg-Ex to Ex, nine Vg, four Gd, and seven lesser (including one altered). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 27% Vg-Ex to Ex, 53% Gd to Vg, and 20% lesser (including a few due solely to pencil marks on the reverse). Also included are the following six duplicates: #23 (Fr), 47 (Fr), 50 (small pencil mark on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), 65 (Vg), 69 (Vg), and 78 (Pr-Fr due mostly to tape on reverse). This is a very attractive near-complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by nineteen Hall of Famers (including Lou Gehrig), and twenty-four scarce high-number series cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the eight graded cards (factoring in the half grade at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 93 ungraded cards) is $1,305. Total: 101 cards (near-complete set of 95 plus 6 duplicates). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
