Presented is a collection of four N347 "Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates," each graded and encapsulated by SGC. Issued by Thos. H. Hall and advertising Between The Acts cigarettes, these cards feature candidates in portrait poses with an advertisement at top and identification at the bottom. This set is of special significance to card collectors as it may actually be the first tobacco-insert card set, issued at the same time as N342 "Actors and Actresses." The four cards offered here may also comprise a complete set as only these four subjects are reported in the World Tobacco Index with no new additions checklisted since then. The off-white reverse features an additional advertisement for Between The Acts Cigarettes along with manufacturer information. This collection consists of the following: Chester Arthur (FAIR 20), William English (GOOD 30), James Garfield (EX 60), and Winfield Hancock (FAIR 20). This set is similar in style to a number of other nonsport sets issued by the same manufacturer and featuring athletes, actors, and actresses. This is a particularly rare collection of early tobacco cards, of special note both for the subjects featured and the fact that the subjects allow for such an early and precise dating, that would make a significant contribution to any advanced nonsport collection.
