Lithographic broadside, published by artist Gilman Russell in 1865, featuring an illustration of President Abraham Lincoln and the text of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln is pictured standing, with his hand on a table. The text is rendered in grand calligraphic style. Russell's name and copyright notice appear at the base, along with the name of the lithographer ("P. S. Duval & Son"). Interestingly, the body of Lincoln seen here is actually that of former California senator John C. Fremont. Russell created the image of Fremont many years earlier, but he used the body both for this print and an earlier 1860 Lincoln campaign poster that he published. The broadside (20.5 x 26.5 inches; visible dimensions) displays two large tears, one in the upper right quadrant and another that extends from the top border and touches upon Lincoln's image, but there is no paper loss. Minor toning and light stains along the borders are also evident. In Good condition overall; however, it should be noted that the piece displays at a much higher level than that suggested by its technically accurate grade. Framed to total dimensions of 24 x 29.5 inches. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
