Original news photo capturing Jackie Robinson greeting Stan Musial after Musial's first-inning home run in the 1949 All-Star Game. Certified as an original Type I photograph by PSA/DNA. 1949 marked not only Jackie Robinson's first All-Star Game appearance, but also the first All-Star Game to include African-American ballplayers (Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Don Newcombe for the National League and Larry Doby for the American League). Fittingly, the game was played at Ebbets Field, where Robinson broke the color barrier two years earlier. Also pictured in the photo are Ralph Kiner and Yogi Berra. Robinson doubled in his first All-Star Game at-bat in the bottom of the first inning and Musial drove them both home with his first-inning blast. The American League defeated the National League 11-7 in the high-scoring affair. An "International News Photo" credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with a later date stamp of "Nov 24 1952" (denoting the date the photo was received by the Neo Gravure Printing Company Inc., of New York). Although no year is listed, the photo can be conclusively dated to the 1949 All-Star Game based upon the players pictured and research regarding the All-Star Game lineups from 1949 to 1956. The photo (6.5 x 8 inches) displays light-to-moderate creasing and is in Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
