Original news photo picturing Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams posing together at Yankee Stadium during the historic 1941 season. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type I photograph by PSA/DNA. Although the original paper news caption remains affixed to the reverse, it is folded over and cannot be read. It also obscures what we know to be an Associated Press credit stamp. Despite not being able to see the caption, this is a famous photo and one we know was taken prior to a game between the Yankees and Red Sox on July 2, 1941. The reason both players are smiling is because DiMaggio was in the midst of his legendary 56-game hitting streak, while Williams was enjoying a season in which he hit .406. DiMaggio was probably smiling a little bit more than Williams after the game, as he set a Major League record by hitting in his 45th consecutive game. DiMaggio managed only one hit in the game, but it was a clean one, a two-run home run in the fifth inning that helped power the Yankees to an 8-4 win. Williams singled in three at-bats, which "dropped" his season average to .401. The photo (9 x 7 inches) displays a small tear on the right border that has been repaired with clear tape on the reverse, as well as a few light border creases. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
