Tony Gwynn Louisville Slugger signature-model ("G169") bat dating from his 1988 season with the San Diego Padres. Graded GU 8.5 by PSA/DNA. Factory records indicate that this particular model bat was ordered by Gwynn only during the 1988 season. The two-toned cupped-end bat is not cracked and displays use along its entire length, including ball marks (including some with white-leather scuffs), a scored handle, and a light coat of pine tar on the handle. The bat's model number ("G169") and Gwynn's uniform number ("19") are written in black marker on the knob, and in gold paint pen withing the cupped barrel end. Gwynn has signed the bat in gold paint pen (grading "8") on the "sweet spot" of the barrel. The amount of use on this bat is not surprising given that Gwynn won his third batting title (out of an eventual eight) in 1988, finishing the season with 7 home runs, 70 RBI, and a .313 batting average. One of the greatest hitters of the modern era, Gwynn's lifetime total of 3,141 hits ranks 21st all time and his .338 career average has been topped by only 11 other modern-day players. Length: 32.5 inches. Weight: 30.2 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA. Pre-certified by Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero/Beckett Authentication Services (for the autograph only). Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
