St. Louis Browns road jersey worn by pitcher Cliff “Mule” Fannin in 1949. Graded A9.5 by MEARS. This is one of only two 1949 St. Louis Browns jerseys we have seen at auction in the past 20 years. It is also the highest-graded St. Louis Browns jersey that we have ever offered. The gray, zipper-front flannel jersey features the team name, "Browns," lettered across the chest and the number "23" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in offset orange on brown felt, thus creating a "3-D" effect. A "Rawlings" label, along with a "44" size tag and a wash tag, are located in the collar. The name "Fannin" as well as the year (“49") are chain-stitched in brown along the left front tail. The jersey is original as issued, with no alterations, and displays light wear. Fannin spent his entire eight-year career (1945-1952) with the Browns, compiling a lifetime mark of 34-51. In 1949 Fannin went 10-14 while posting a 4.17 ERA. This is a scarce and extremely desirable Browns “style” jersey, as it was only used by the club during the six-year period 1946 through 1951. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with a half-point deducted for three tiny moth holes on the number). LOA from Troy Kinunen and Dave Bushing/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
