Complete 50-card set of 1888 N22 Allen & Ginter “Racing Colors of the World” consisting of thirty-nine cards "with borders" and eleven "without borders." Also included are seventeen variations for a total of sixty-seven cards. This lot is part of an exciting, fresh-to-the-hobby collection consigned to this auction by the family of a Midwestern collector who built his impressive collection over a period of many decades, beginning as a young boy in the 1930s. Somewhat reminiscent in terms of their high quality and design to the N162 Old Judge & Gypsy Queen Champions series, these sporting cards, which were issued with Allen & Ginter Cigarettes, feature attractive female jockeys dressed in fancy jockey’s attire riding racehorses. The colors printed on the cards represent, at the time, well-known stables from around the world. The back of each card features a checklist of the set. Condition of the complete set is 18% Gd and 82% Pr to Fr (mostly due to back damage and including ten due mostly to pencil marks on the reverse and a couple that measure small). The seventeen variations are cards "without borders" (cards in this set are found with full-color bleed and with white borders). This is a very presentable complete set of Allen & Ginter “Racing Colors of the World,” which has always been highly appreciated by nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors for its beauty and subject matter. Total: 67 cards (complete set of fifty plus seventeen variations). Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
