Bank check, dated August 4, 1935, signed in black fountain pen by Amelia Earhart (1897 - disappeared 1937), American aviator. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the check and graded the signature EX-MT 6. The check, drawn on the The Fifth Avenue Bank of New York, is made out to "Paul Mantz" in the amount of $60.00. Signed by Earhart along the base. Endorsed by Mantz on the reverse, as well as by John Drew. Earhart, who was the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928, disappeared mysteriously over the Pacific in 1937 while attempting a circumnavigational flight of the earth. Neither she nor her plane were ever found despite numerous searches, which continue to this day. Paul Mantz was a Hollywood stunt pilot who Earhart hired to help her improve her long-distance flying. In September 1935, shortly after this check was written, Earhart and Mantz officially went into business together by opening the Earhart-Mantz Flying School, located in Burbank, California. Because of her great celebrity status and mysterious disappearance, Earhart's signature, which is scarce because of her early demise, has always been highly prized by collectors. Checks in particular are especially desirable, given the inherent authenticity of the signature. The check (6.25 x 2.75 inches), which displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes (some of which touch upon Earhart's signature), displays a vertical fold and is otherwise in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
