FIFA 1950 World Cup Championship gold medal awarded to Juan Alberto Schiaffino as a member of Uruguay. One side of the medal features a leg kicking a soccer ball and is lettered "IV Campeonato Mundial De Futebol - Brasil 1950." The other side pictures the landscape of Rio de Janeiro and Municipal Stadium and is lettered "Rio de Janeiro" and "Estadio Municipal." Lettered along the edge of the coin is the name of the recipient "J. Schiaffino," along with "Gazola" and "Campeon Del Mundo." Juan Schiaffino was an Italian-Uruguayan football player who was a member of Uruguay during the 1950 World Cup, which was held in Brazil. Schiaffino scored a goal in the 1950 World Cup championship game, when Uruguay upset heavily favored Brazil 2-1 to capture its second World Cup championship. Schiaffino was one of the top players of his era and later starred with A. C. Milan and Roma in Italy. He is also considered the greatest player in the history of Uruguay soccer. FIFA World Cup gold medals are scarce, especially those awarded to a player of Schiaffino's stature. The medal (1.375 inches in diameter) displays several light nicks and scratches. In Excellent condition overall. Accompanied by a one-page typed-signed letter from former owner Adrian Kolendar in which he states that the medal originates from the collection of Rony Almeida, an Ecuadorian-American soccer fan, numismatist, and museum curator who assembled one of the finest private collections of soccer memorabilia in the world.
