Official Jack Dolph ABA basketball, dating from the 1967-1972 manufacturing period, presented to Larry Jones of the Denver Rockets on the occasion of his 10,000th career point. The basketball is decorated with the particulars of the momentous achievement on the panel underneath the league stamping, reading in full "Larry Jones/10,000 Career Points/Jan. 11, 1973/Dallas vs. San Diego." The white lettering stands out prominently against the blue panel and makes for a particularly impressive display. Larry Jones was one of the ABA's brightest stars and most dangerous scorers, becoming the first player in the league to tally 5,000 career points before eclipsing the 10,000 career points mark just shy of three years later. This basketball originates from the family of Jones' high school basketball coach, Jackie Moore, at East High School in Columbus, Ohio. Jones credited Moore with helping get his academic and athletic career on track and presented him with this basketball as a display of thanks. Aside from this basketball's significance related to Jones, it remains a particularly scarce and desirable relic of the ABA. Jack Dolph was the ABA's second full-time commissioner, and official balls bearing his facsimile signature are scarce, especially high-grade examples such as this. The offered ball is in overall Near Mint or better condition and represents one of the finest examples we have ever handled. This is a superb item, which recognizes one of the top accomplishments in the ABA and would be at home in even the most advanced basketball collection. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
