One-page typed letter, dated October 9, 1928, signed by legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne. In his letter, on "University of Notre Dame Athletic Association" letterhead, Rockne writes to one of his former players, Frank Rydzewski, in response to a request for tickets. In full: "Dear Rydzewski: Am enclosing herewith eight tickets for the Navy game Saturday which is in accordance with the amount of money you sent. Sorry I can't send you anything better but we are absolutely sold out. Yours sincerely, K. K. Rockne [signed]." Rockne's signature has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades "9." Frank Rydzewski was an All-America center for Notre Dame in 1917. He later enjoyed a successful seven-year NFL career (1920-1926) playing for a number of teams. Rockne, who is considered one of the greatest football coaches of all time, perished tragically in a plane crash on March 31, 1931, at the age of 43. As a result, his signature today is scarce. This is just the second Rockne letter we have offered and the fact that it was written to a former player and has Notre Dame football content makes it especially appealing. The letter (8 x 10 inches, visible dimensions) displays one horizontal and two vertical folds, light toning. a few tiny tears along the fold lines, light creasing, and a few tiny areas of discoloration. In apparent Very Good condition. Matted together with what appears to be a vintage studio photograph (7.25 x 9 inches; visible dimensions) of Rockne (apparent Near Mint condition). Total dimensions: 14.5 x 27 inches. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
