Baltimore Orioles road jersey worn by first baseman Boog Powell in 1966. The gray flannel jersey is lettered "Baltimore" across the front and features the number "26" on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in orange on black felt. The year, jersey number, and size ("66 26 48") are chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag in the collar. A "Spalding" label is situated on the left front tail, below which are a laundry tag and adjacent flag tag reading "Set 1 1966." Powell has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie (grading "8") in the collar. Powell's name has been removed from the reverse; otherwise the jersey is original as issued, with no other alterations. The jersey displays moderate-to-heavy use, including light staining, a tiny tear on the reverse, and wear to the applied lettering and numerals. This garment has the unique provenance of having once resided in the famed Barry Halper Collection and was purchased by our consignor at the sale of Halper's collection in 1999. It has remained in his sole possession since that time. Powell enjoyed a banner season in 1966, batting .287 with 34 home runs and 109 RBI. Those numbers not only helped lead the Orioles to the pennant, but also helped Powell finish third in the MVP voting at season's end. Powell also batted .357 with one RBI in the Orioles four-game sweep of the Dodgers in the 1966 World Series. One of the most popular players in Orioles history, Powell finished his 17-year career (1961-1977) with 339 home runs, 1,187 RBI, and a .266 lifetime average. Accompanied by the original Sotheby's 1999 auction tag. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
