1947 "Agonis Award" certificate featuring the black fountain-pen signatures of both Cy Young and Honus Wagner. Accompanied by a full LOA from PSA/DNA, which has graded the signatures NM-MT+ 8.5 overall (the Wagner signature grades NR-MT 8 and the Young signature grades MINT 9, resulting in an overall grade of NR-MT+ 8.5). This is a basketball award issued on May 26, 1947, to "William Lavelle" as a member of the "Newark High School Basketball Team," which was the Champion of the Central Ohio League that year. It has been signed along the base by four officials of the Agonis Club. Below the official signatures are those of Wagner (who added "Pirates Coach" beneath his signature), Young, and "Fritz Howell," who was an Associated Press sportswriter. While we do not know if Wagner, Young, and Howell had any official duties at the event (this is the first such example of this award we have ever seen), the addition of their signatures on this certificate must have surely pleased the recipient, not to mention collectors today. The certificate (8 x 10 inches), which is printed on heavy paper stock, is slightly toned. The name of "Budd Sweeney" is written on the reverse in back ink. Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
