Rare uncut display box proof sheet for the 1973 Topps "Candy Lids" set. This box design was produced to hold twenty-four unopened containers of bubble gum. The box lid and side panels have images of the actual cards from the set featuring Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, and Jim Palmer. The sheet is a final process proof sheet with several printer notations in ink. The purpose of the notations was for the printer to make final color corrections prior to authorizing production quantities. This is a true proof sheet with working notations and color bars. This is one of the most interesting and unusual Topps issues ever created. The "cards" are actually round lids designed to be the tops of little cups of bubble-gum. A colorful portrait of one of fifty-five stars and Hall of Famers of the day is found on the bottom of each lid, with advertising for "Baseball Stars Gum" on the top. While it is impossible to know how many of these display box proof sheets exist, this is the first example we have ever seen or offered. Because of the extensive printer's notations, it is difficult to grade, but the sheet displays very well and the condition flaws relate directly to its intended use. The sheet is bright and crisp, with magnificent colors, three small pieces missing from the top edge, and a heavy crease across the top. A superb companion piece to any complete 1973 Topps "Candy Lids" set or addition to any advertising or display collection. Dimensions: approximately 22 x 28 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
