This Series 2 uncut sheet of Topps Garbage Pail Kids contains 132 cards, including one complete eighty-two card set and fifty duplicates. Clearly a parody of Coleco's popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls (which ultimately led to a trademark infringement lawsuit), Topps Garbage Pail Kids cards were the brainchild of Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman (of Maus graphic novel fame), who was also the main creator of Topps Wacky Packages. Each sticker features a humorously drawn cartoon kid with a rhyming, alliterative, or word play nickname. Topps Garbage Pail Kids stickers were an instant hit with youngsters, with many schools banning them because of their edgy content and the distractions they were causing. Each series is made up of eighty-two cards, of which forty-one are labeled with an "a" or b" suffix after the card number, depicting the same picture but with an alternate name. This sheet includes card #49b "Schizo Fran" variation which was withdrawn and later replaced by "Fran Fran" with the most commonly speculated reason being that it was too controversial a name to be used in a product marketed at children. The sheet has an overall Very Good appearance with imperfections mostly relegated to the edges, including creases and moderate edge and corner wear, all of which are common when dealing with these large uncut sheets. Despite these condition flaws, the sheet displays nicely with bold, bright colors, and would serve as an outstanding addition to any advanced Garbage Pail Kids or uncut-sheet collection. Dimensions: 28-1/2 by 43 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
