Rare near-complete box of 1933 Tattoo Orbit Chewing gum, "Popeye Folder Series," accompanied by an unopened package of box inserts (these would form the back panel "marquee" of the retail box). These items, along with other vintage gum boxes and gum-related material, were just recently discovered in a Midwest warehouse. Incredibly, our consignor, who was involved in the purchase of the building, rescued all of the material from a large trash bin. (The balance of that material, which we are calling "The Midwest Warehouse Find," is featured in 17 separate lots in this auction.)
The colorful display box (9 x 7 x 1.75 inches) contains 148 unopened packs of gum (the box was originally issued with 120 packs). As clearly noted on the colorful back-panel of the counter display box, a customer received a free "Popeye Folder" with the purchase of each pack. It should be noted that the folders were not issued in the packs. Instead, they would be displayed in the box with the gum and distributed with each pack of game purchased. The reason that this box is able to hold more gum than originally issued is because the extra packs take up the space that would have been occupied by the "Popeye Folders." The box lid, which is detached on all sides from the bottom of the box, has the inventory code "A-67-D" written in blue pencil on the top. All of the side flaps are detached at the corners and display small tears.
Accompanying the box is an unopened package of box inserts (9 x 8 inches) that includes a sample insert on top. Because the package (wrapped in brown paper) remains bound by string, we do not know the exact number of inserts enclosed, but we estimate it to be approximately 200. The sample insert is in Good to Very Good condition, but we can only assume the remainder in the unopened package are close to Near Mint overall. Two items: near-complete box and unopened package of box inserts. Please Note: the box is extremely brittle. REA will do our best to store and pack the box as safely as possible, but the buyer assumes the risk of further deterioration during shipping. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
