Intimate, close-up portrait of Babe Ruth in uniform, boldly signed by Ruth in blue fountain pen in the lower right corner. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the photo and graded the signature MINT 9. This is one of the finest signed examples of this photo we have seen, with the signature looking like it was scripted just minutes ago. Ruth sometimes used this particular sepia photo during the early 1940s to fulfill autograph requests, as we have seen other signed examples over the years. However, this is one of only two we can recall that is simply signed by Ruth, as all the others were personalized to a specific individual. The haunting image of Ruth, combined with the impeccable signature example, makes this an especially attractive and desirable Ruth-signed photo. The photo (10 x 8 inches) displays a number of light-to-moderate creases (none affecting the signature), as well as a small stain on the reverse (not visible from the front). In Good to Very Good condition overall, but it presents at a much higher level than that suggested by its technically accurate grade. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
