Presented is a fascinating original 1962 Topps uncut proof sheet featuring eight final issued cards, along with twenty different images that were used to create the final cards for the 1959 Topps baseball set, including Sandy Koufax, Eddie Mathews, Enos Slaughter, Don Zimmer, and Billy Pierce's "Baseball Thrills" card, and in addition there are two images of actual Bazooka bubble gum pieces. It is very unusual that the images used for the 1959 Topps set would be included on a 1962 Topps proof sheet, but one could assume that Topps had images of the featured players in their image files and planned for them to be included in the 1962 set in the first run of proof sheets. Whatever the explanation might be, this is the only example we have ever seen, and it may very well be unique! Topps proof sheets are easily distinguished from production sheets by their blank-backs and large margin areas with color proofing bars. The sheet has printer notations on the borders. The purpose of the notations was for the printer to make final color corrections prior to authorizing production quantities. This is a true proof sheet with working notations and color bars. Beyond the condition flaws related directly to its intended use, the sheet shows three pieces of tape near the corners (plastic corner mount stuck to the upper right from at one time being framed), light creasing, and moisture staining. The blank-backed reverse displays considerable discoloration, most likely from exposure to moisture. This sheet would make an outstanding companion piece to any 1962 Topps set or serve as an extraordinary addition to any uncut sheet collection. Dimensions: 28 x 21.5 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
