Original large-format photo capturing Rocky Marciano landing the blow that knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott in their heavyweight championship bout on September 23, 1952, at Philadelphia's Municipal Stadium. Marciano, the challenger, was trailing badly by points at the start of the 13th round, but he managed to corner Walcott and connect with the punch seen here that gave him the title. This image, taken by Herb Scharfman, is one of the most famous photos in boxing history and truly captures the raw power that epitomized Marciano's career. The photo (13.25 x 10.5 inches) displays a few scratches and tiny abrasions, and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. It is affixed to a cardboard mount measuring 16 x 13.75 inches. The photographer's name, Herb Scharfman, is written on the reverse in red marker. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
